Dunhill Links Championship at St Andrews

02 - 05 October 2008

St Andrews is where it all started - the undoubted Home of Golf.

Its traditional links is the oldest in the world and its layout is unique and challenging whilst the sense of histor is overwhelming. Over 600 years, one simple track hacked through the bushes and heather has developed into six golf courses - the world-famous Old Course (where Dunhill links championship final round was played) and its sister courses, The New, The Jubilee, The Eden, The Strathtyrum and The Balgove - all run by the St Andrews Links Trust.

Natural evolution and man-made changes have re-shaped some of the details of the Old Course, but the tumbling nature of the dunes terrain and the basic challenge presented by almost every hole would still be recognised today by the golfing pioneers who first struck a ball over the land that has become universally known as the Home of Golf.

Teams consist of one professional player and one amateur, competing in pairs. This might not sound terribly interesting but note: the pro is likely to be a world beater and the amateur a celebrity – like Michael Douglas, Ian Botham or Hugh Grant, for example. The Dunhill Links Championship, one of the richest on the circuit, is a celebration of links (courses by the sea) golf, played over three separate locations with the fourth and final round played at the famous Old Course of St Andrews
