Glyndebourne Opera Programme
Festival 2008 May - August L'incoronazione di Poppea 18-May - 4-Jul
L'incoronazione di Poppea is Claudio Monteverdi's (1567-1643) last opera. It was premiered at Teatro di Giovanni e Paolo in Venice in 1642 and was given its first professional production at Glyndebourne in 1962. The plot, by librettist Busenello, is suggested in the prologue with the apparent triumph of Love over Virtue and Fortune. Love, reflected through Nerone's blind infatuation for the amoral and relentlessly ambitious Poppea, is powerfully illustrated in one of the most beautiful love duets ever written at the conclusion of this masterpiece. | | Eugene Onegin 1-May - 11-Jul
Pytor Ilyich Tchaikovsky's (1840-1893) opera based upon Pushkin's poem Yevgeny Onyegin premiered at the Imperial College of Music, Little Theatre in Moscow, 1879. The first production at Glyndebourne was in 1968.
For 2008 Vladimir Jurowski conducts the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Glyndebourne Chorus in a revival of the 1994 Festival production, sung in Russian. Soprano Maija Kovalevska and baritone Ales Jenis make their Glyndebourne debuts in the roles of Tatiana and Onegin. | | Albert Herring 14-Jun - 19-Jul
Albert Herring received its premiere at Glyndebourne in 1947. In 1985 Sir Peter Hall's masterly production was performed for the first time. With its minutely detailed period setting, it continues to delight Glyndebourne audiences.
| | Carmen 6-Jul - 31-Aug
At its first performance, Georges Bizet's (1838-1875) Carmen was dismissed by the critics; 'What truth, but what scandal!' Based on a libretto by Meilhac and Halévy after a novella by Mérimée, the story moved far away from the traditional opéra-comique subject matter to which audiences of the time were used. | | Hänsel und Gretel 20-Jul - 29-Aug
Glyndebourne is presenting Englebert Humperdinck's (1854-1921) Hänsel und Gretel for the first time in the 2008 Festival. This magical world of fairy-tale actually began life as a commission from the composer's sister, Adelheid Wette, who had adapted the original Grimm tale into a play for her own children. Humperdinck originally produced four songs for her, but the operatic potential of the fable was clear. The work has been a constant and extraordinary success since its premiere in 1893. | | Love and Other Demons 10-Aug - 30-Aug
Love and Other Demons is a story of forbidden love set in the tropical and magical world of 18th century Colombia, adapted from the novella by Nobel-prizewinner, Gabriel García Márquez. One Sunday in the slave market in the port of Cartagena de Indias, a young girl is bitten by a dog. The girl is Sierva Maria of All The Angels, the daughter of the Marquis, and the dog is rabid.
